Travel Guide

Practical guides, travel tips and answers to help you prepare for your journey to Myanmar and beyond.

Visa and entry

Most visitors need an e-visa or a visa-on-arrival option. Requirements change, so check the official government visa information for your nationality before you book. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry.

Best time to travel

November to February is the dry and most comfortable season. March to May is hot, and June to October is the rainy season with fewer crowds. See our Myanmar page for more on each season.

Money and payments

The local currency is the kyat (MMK). Credit cards are accepted only at some hotels and upscale venues, so bring enough cash for daily expenses. Carry clean, undamaged US dollar notes if you plan to exchange them, and check the current exchange rules before you travel.

Local etiquette

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering.
  • Ask for permission before photographing people, especially monks and villagers.
  • Never touch a monk, and avoid pointing your feet at people or Buddha images.
  • Use your right hand when giving or receiving items, and keep public displays of affection low-key.

Health and safety

  • Get travel insurance that covers medical care and emergency evacuation.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water and carry a basic first-aid kit.
  • Check your health provider for recommended vaccines well before departure.
  • Keep copies of your passport, visa and insurance details in a safe place.

Getting around

Domestic flights connect the main cities, and private drivers are the most comfortable way to see the country. Trains and buses are available on some routes. Our team arranges transport as part of every tour.

Packing essentials

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing and a light layer for air-conditioned spaces
  • Comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off
  • Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses
  • A reusable water bottle and a power bank
  • A small bag for donations and temple visits
